Is This The Best PCOS Book For The Newly Diagnosed? A Review Of 'PCOS Diet for the Newly Diagnosed'

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

This article is my personal review of PCOS Diet for the Newly Diagnosed, a book by Tara Spencer with an endorsement from Megan-Marie Stewart.

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in 2019. At the time I felt very lost and found that there wasn't much information widely available. I remember being sat in the GP's room and I was given an A4 print off with information about PCOS and told that there was no cure and that I would struggle to get pregnant but to come back when I was looking to get pregnant. I was put on Dianette and I went on my way. I sat in my car for about an hour outside the GP surgery just feeling devastated and I had so many questions going round in my head.

I found this experience devastating, but sadly it seems to be a common experience based on what I have heard from many women in the support groups I am in. After a week of feeling low about the news, my mum presented me with this book: PCOS Diet for the Newly Diagnosed.

I decided to give the book a read as a first place to start with my PCOS journey and it really gave me a better understanding of what PCOS is and how I can manage it. Now I highly recommend this book if you are new to PCOS! It was definitely a lot more helpful than I thought it would be, and a year on from my diagnosis I still refer back to it (especially for the yummy recipes).

What is in the book?

The first pages of this book are an introduction to the authors and a bit about their story with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Then the book is broken down into 9 sections:

  1. PCOS and Metabolism Repair

  2. Living well to eat well

  3. Breakfast

  4. Snacks, Sides

  5. Vegetarian and Vegan

  6. Fish and Seafood

  7. Poultry and Meat

  8. Drinks and Desserts

  9. Broths, Sauces and Dressings

I find most of the recipes are super yummy and easy to make. There are a couple of recipes that aren't to my personal taste, but these might be your favorite ones!

My favorite section of the book is 'Living well to eat well' as it highlights the other important factors in managing PCOS alongside food, such as the importance of adequate rest and sleep, taking time to destress through pleasurable activities and exercising regularly to increase insulin sensitivity.

In Conclusion

There are many fantastic books out there to help women on their journey with PCOS, however for me personally, this book has really helped me, especially at the start of my PCOS journey, to better understand how to help my body manage PCOS. For that reason, I think PCOS Diet for the Newly Diagnosed is definitely one of the best books on the market for women living with Polycystic ovary syndrome.

Thank you to everyone supporting and following my PCOS journey!
